Early Head Start Training and Expansion

Greater Bergen Community Action, Inc. is Bergen County’s federally designated anti-poverty agency. It has sponsored a Head Start program since 1968 and added Early Head Start services in 2009. The agency also provides adult education and housing counseling services, transitional shelters for at-risk youth and men, home energy assistance services, and financial literacy and economic opportunity programs.

This project supports the expansion of Early Head Start in Paterson, Garfield, and Jersey City to meet the needs of a growing number of eligible infants and toddlers whose families lack access to high-quality, affordable child care. The project aims to serve 256 young children by converting existing Head Start slots to Early Head Start slots in Paterson and Garfield and creating new Early Head Start classrooms in Jersey City. An educational consultant also is providing in-classroom coaching and mentoring support to Early Head Start infant and toddler caregivers in Paterson.
