Power of Hotspotting:  Report Reveals Hospital Utilization Patterns in the Greater New Brunswick Area

A Nicholson-funded report shows the power of hotspotting in providing objective data to support thoughtful, informed local community health planning. The Greater New Brunswick Hotspotting Project identified geographic clusters of patients who were high users of Medicaid services, revealing that just 10% of census blocks in New Brunswick and Franklin Township accounted for 37% of hospital receipts.

In an Op-Ed for Health Affairs  “GrantWatch” blog, Joan Randell and Rachel Cahill write about the recently-released Medicaid 2.0 Blueprint. The Blueprint resulted from a collaborative process that brought together stakeholders across New Jersey. Their post suggests that other foundations may want to support a similar process for modernizing other states’ Medicaid programs.
