Founded in 1930, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is a nonprofit, professional membership association representing more than 66,000 general pediatricians, pediatric medical subspecialists, pediatric surgical specialists, and trainees. AAP is dedicated to promoting optimal health and well-being for every child as well as helping to ensure that Academy members practice the highest quality health care and experience professional satisfaction and personal well-being.
This project builds on a previous planning project to promote healthy early child development in New Jersey through the establishment of a community health and advocacy collaborative among the pediatric residency programs in the state. During the planning phase, all pediatric residency programs in New Jersey committed to participate in this collaborative, and the current implementation project will support AAP in developing partnerships between Departments of Pediatrics and early childhood professionals to strengthen the early learning and development environment for children in New Jersey. The project also is advancing community-level efforts to meet local needs and improve the system of care and services for early childhood. For example, all of the residency programs have entered into partnerships with local Family Success Centers. Finally, it is training the current and next generation of pediatricians and community-based organization leaders to effectively engage in systems change work through structural enhancements in leadership development and training curricula.
