Nicholson Grant Funds Innovative Organizational Development Program at Safety Net Hospital

The Nicholson Foundation has awarded Stevens Institute of Technology a grant to create and implement an educational and organizational development program at Monmouth Medical Center, a safety net hospital in Long Branch, New Jersey. The program will examine best national and regional practices, perform internal reviews, and deliver staff training to improve quality and care for safety net patients and the expanding Medicaid population.

A main focus of the pilot program will be to improve the hospital’s scores under the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), which measures patient perceptions and evaluations of care. HCAHPS rankings determine Medicaid reimbursement funding. Stevens Institute of Technology will help Monmouth Medical Center management deploy field-tested and innovative educational programming to improve HCAHPS scores through tangible staff performance improvement.

Safety net hospitals such as Monmouth Medical Center often have limited resources to devote to innovation that improves health outcomes for Medicaid patients. This pilot program aims to demonstrate that safety net hospitals will be able to increase staff retention, improve the patient experience, and optimize the hospital’s Medicaid reimbursement through innovative approaches to staff training.
