On Thursday, February 18, teams from several New Jersey safety net healthcare organizations participating in the Nicholson-supported New Jersey Innovation Catalyst Initiative came together at Panasonic headquarters in Newark to take part in an Innovation Fair.

The Innovation Fair marks a half-way point in the Foundation’s Innovation Catalyst Initiative.  In the first phase of this program, the teams received training in human-centered design and innovative thinking from the California-based Center for Care Innovations (CCI). In the next phase, the teams will apply these techniques to implement  a project to address an identified problem at their organization.  Organizations participating  in the Innovation Fair include CompleteCare Health Network, Henry J. Austin Health Center, the New Jersey Primary Care Association, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, Trinitas Regional Medical Center, the Visiting Nurse Association Health Group Inc., and the Hospital Alliance of New Jersey.

Participants also had a chance to meet with vendors who have developed innovative technologies for the healthcare safety net, including Sense Health, Purple Binder, Polyglot System, Shift Health, and Transcendent Endeavors.

The importance of inculcating a culture of innovation in New Jersey to meet the challenges of providing care for the safety net was stressed throughout the Innovation Fair. “The reason we’re all here is that healthcare must transform,” said participant Dr. Kemi Alli, CEO of Henry J. Austin Health Center. “If we don’t innovate, we won’t survive in the healthcare industry.”
