Expert Panel Discusses The Future of Medicaid in New Jersey

With nearly one in five New Jersey residents covered by Medicaid, the state’s Medicaid program plays a critical role in our healthcare system. On October 12, NJ Spotlight hosted a roundtable panel with policy experts, elected officials, and industry leaders on the challenges facing Medicaid in New Jersey.

Panelists included Rachel Cahill, Senior Healthcare Program Officer, The Nicholson Foundation; Matthew D’Oria, Chief Transformation Officer, New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute; Ev Liebman, Director of Advocacy, AARP of New Jersey; Erhardt Preitauer, Senior Vice President for Government Programs, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey; Joseph F. Vitale, (D-Middlesex), Chair Senate Health, Human Services & Senior Citizens Committee, NJ Senate; and Joseph B. Young, Esq., Executive Director, Disability Rights of New Jersey. NJ Spotlight health reporter Lilo Stainton moderated the discussion.

The panel examined a wide variety of topics relating to Medicaid, including data access problems, value-based payment reforms, quality measurement, and innovations in using Medicaid to address social determinants of health and provide needed wrap-around services, like transportation and housing.

Panelists also discussed the Nicholson-funded Medicaid 2.0 Blueprint, which lays out 24 detailed recommendations to both redesign and modernize New Jersey’s  program to improve the quality, cost, and outcomes of care for Medicaid beneficiaries.
